Carters Steam Fair

Atkinson Transport

No. 8 - The King

Built in Feb. 1973 for Mid-Glamorgan Council to be used as a gritter. We have some service documents which shows that this vehicle had done 12,000 miles by 1982! We purchased this Atkinson on 25/10/1990 and named it 'The Wanderer', however we later renamed it 'The King'. In 1990, the gritter body was removed, the chassis shortened along with the propshaft. The air tanks were moved and the whole vehicle was steam cleaned. Once a new rear body had been built, the whole lorry, which had been stripped, was repainted, lined out and signwritten. A full service followed and a winch and new diesel tank were also fitted. As you can tell much work has been done over the years and in 1992 we added a sign board over the cab, and a portrait of 'Elvis' by Anna Carter - explaining the name change in 1995. This Atkinson usually tows the Dodgem boards and is driven by Seth Carter.
