Scammell Transport
No. 1 - Kathleen
Built in 1951 for United Dairies as an Artic Unit, this vehicle was converted to a Showmans tractor with ballast body by David Wyn. Carters acquired it in 1977 from Kathleen Wyn (widow of David) and we promised to keep its name. Some restoration has taken place including changing the tractor body.
No. 2 - Mr Plod
Built in 1957, this vehicle has spent time with Esso, and has been a Breakers vehicle. We purchased it in 1976. Some restoration took place including replacing the original Leyland engine with a 6LW Gardner. In 1983 a total repaint and decoration was carried out by John Pockett. Mr Plod was our first Scammell, however it is currently off the road awaiting a full restoration.
No. 3 - Old Ugly
Previously called Superior and renamed in 1991. It was built in 1967 for Stamp Transport. It was acquired by Baron Coupland for Showland use. During the winter of 1979/80 a total restoration and redit occurred. A crane was added in 1983 for lifting the yacht axles. Once again it has not been in use for a couple of years and awaits restoration.
No. 4 - Why Me
Built in WW2 as a 'pool tractor'/petrol tanker. It was used by British Aerospace prior to our purchase as a shunting tractor in 1980. In 1983/84 the cab was rebuilt and a total restoration was undertaken including new windscreen, headlamps, dash, sidelights and a repaint. Extensive work has been carried over the years. Its last overhaul was in 1998 when it had a rear body fitted, with air compressor added for use on the Jets ride. It is currently ready to go but is not in service at the moment.
No. 5 - Why Not
Built in 1944 as a Pool Tanker. It was restored by a previous owner in the mid-seventies. It was registered on 28/7/1944. Carters purchased it in 1983 from Bill McAlpine. An extensive restoration took place which included a new body, lighting sets fittted, painting and lining out. It was put into storage in 1991. The cab was rebuilt in the mid-nineties. It is currently in use hauling the steam yachts, having come out of storage in 2002.
No.. 6 - Why Worry
Built in 1961, this vehicle has spent a lot of time Showland use, and at one time it was owned by Anthony Harris. Carters purchased it in 1987 and undertook some restoration. This vehicle includes a 4LW 180 Amp Dynamo, which powers the lights on the Gallopers and has a 150 Gardner engine.
No. 12 - Victorious
Built in 1963, this vehicle was an Artic, and we brought it from Dennis Brandt of Kew Pumping Station. We converted it for Showmans use. It has an identical body to No. 14 and is owned by Joby Carter. Its engine is a Gardner 150s and has 6LW generators.
No. 14 - The Maidonian
Built in 1960 for Shell Mex. It then went to the haulage company Saunders and was laid up for twenty years. Joby Carter turned it into a Showmans tractor during the late nineties and it now tows the Gallopers and some of the living wagons. The vehicle is powered by a Gardner 150 engine, and has a Gardner 6LW generator, with 364 Lister Dynamo 110V.DC.
No. 15 - Perseverence
Built in 1954. Seth Carter brought it from Bobby Rawlins. A generator was fitted on the back, which was also from Bobby Rawlins and a new body was also fitted on the back. The generator is a 5LW Gardner with a 110v Lister Dynamo. The tractor is fitted with a 6LW Gardner engine and currently tows box trucks and wagons.
