Do you have an interest in fairground art?

Join Joby for a series of five virtual sessions broadcasted live plus our all NEW recordings that will be sent to you for you to refer back to.

Each of these sessions will be one hour long where he will demonstrate traditional brush-painted fairground art techniques which are usually passed down through the generations.

This virtual course will cover:

  • Flamboyant Painting
  • Lining
  • Scrolls
  • Blending
  • Marbling
  • Colour Combinations
  • The history of Fairground Art
  • and so much more

To make the most of your session you will need a writing instrument and some paper at the ready to take notes. Should you want to have a go at some of the techniques covered you will need paint, a paintbrush, and a palette which can be bought from our shop here

This is a unique chance to hear Joby share some of his expertise in the unique art of the fairground, normally reserved for students on his two-day fancy lettering and fairground art courses. Whilst you may feel this isn’t akin to signwriting this course will broaden your horizons because it covers a diverse range of techniques that you may well be asked to recreate.

During the course Joby holds an auction for you, the course attendees. Providing you with the opportunity to buy some of his work whilst supporting the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice; a charity based near to the fairs winter quarters in White Waltham. The charity provides an invaluable hospice service to children in the community and their families, 100% of the auction proceeds are donated to the charity with you donating straight to them. Over the past 4 years Carters have raised over £40,000.00 for the charity and we are delighted to be able to continue to do this.

In his 28 years as a signwriter and fairground artist, Joby has gained extensive knowledge of fairground painting, spanning styles from the Victorian era up to the 1960s. His work on Carters Steam Fair provides him with an unusual opportunity to develop and emulate traditional fairground art in his everyday work, leaving him with an ability to produce beautiful fairground paintwork – a skill that is now rarely practiced and even less commonly mastered. All the artwork on the fair is brush-painted – no airbrush artwork here!

In this special course, Joby will teach you traditional ways of working that span well over 100 years. He is passionate about keeping the traditional skills of signwriting and brush-painted fairground art alive, and he loves sharing his knowledge with his students!

Joby grew up on a vintage fairground, surrounded by beautiful artwork and plenty of highly skilled artists – including his parents, John and Anna Carter. A lot of his work involves replicating and emulating the work of fantastic fairground artists, from Edwin Hall and Sid Howell to Duffield and Fred Fowle, so who better to show you the ins and outs of the incredible world of fairground painting?
