What will you learn?

This action-packed weekend offers a rare opportunity to learn about the secretive craft of fairground painting, including fancy lettering. There will be demonstrations of techniques and styles, and an opportunity to get hands-on and practice your fairground flourishes.

The workshop will cover the following fancy lettering and fairground art techniques:

  • Block Lettering
  • The 3D effect
  • Understanding shadows
  • Gold leaf & gilding
  • Flamboyant painting
  • Blending
  • Lining
  • Scrolls
  • Marbling
  • Colour combinations and more

Please note this workshop shows advanced painting techniques, and is best suited to people who have experience of signwriting already. If you want to learn and have a go at signwriting, we recommend you come on one of our 5-day courses first.

If you have a particular piece of fancy lettering or decoration that you would like to replicate during the workshop, please send it to us here in advance so Joby can have a look at what you want to achieve.

What’s included?

You will have the opportunity to try some techniques and will be provided with a board to practice on, brushes and paint for the duration of the workshop. If you would like a board to take home with you, coachpainted boards will be available to buy.

There will also be the opportunity to buy your own equipment at the end of the workshop to take home and practice. You are welcome to bring something with you to paint, as long as it will feasibly fit in the workshop and doesn’t need a fork lift to move it!
Please wear old clothes that you don’t care about – you will get painty!

Where is the course?

The courses are held in Joby’s paintshop at the Carters Steam Fair Yard, in White Waltham near Maidenhead.

Download our course factsheet (PDF) for more information on course timings, where to stay, parking and how to find us.

Please note these courses are very popular. To secure your place you need to book and pay the full fee. The workshop holds a maximum of 10 people, and we work on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here for our Refunds Policy.

What Our Students Say:

“I booked onto Carters’ Fancy Lettering weekend because I had enjoyed the week long signwriting course that I had attended earlier in the year.

Having never done anything like them I was a bit concerned at first that I would be totally out of my depth (I am an engineer, not an artist!) but Joby and Aaron were fabulous teachers and I enjoyed both courses immensely.

Everyone I met at the yard was really friendly and to cut a long story short I am now involved with heritage conservation at a local steam museum and am also getting paid to paint signs! Many thanks for everything, and see you at Letterheads!”
