To aid you during this course you will need to have a writing instrument and some paper at the ready, some scissors and an old cereal box / thin cardboard are also needed.
During the course Joby holds an auction for you, the course attendees; providing you with the opportunity to buy some of his work whilst supporting the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice; a charity based near to the fairs winter quarters in White Waltham. The charity provides an invaluable hospice service to children in the community and their families, 100% of the auction proceeds are donated to the charity with you donating straight to them. Over the past 4 years Carters have raised over £40,000.00 for the charity and we are delighted to be able to continue to do this.
In his 28 years as a signwriter and fairground artist, Joby has gained extensive knowledge of fancy lettering. His work on Carters Steam Fair provides him with an unusual opportunity to use fancy lettering styles in his everyday work, leaving him with an ability to produce accurate blocks and shadows on letters – a skill that often eludes people, even some professional signwriters.
These days, when many people are turning to digital software, or use tapes, vinyls and masking, Joby remains true to the craft which hasn’t changed over the centuries. He will teach you traditional ways of working that span well over 100 years, and is passionate about keeping the traditional skill of signwriting and brush-painted fairground art alive. And he loves sharing his knowledge with his students!
Joby learned his craft from Stan Wilkinson, continuing a signwriting lineage that spans five generations. Stan Wilkinson was apprentice to Mr Giles, who had been trained by his father, who in turn was trained by his father before him, an in-house signwriter for Hovis in Basingstoke during the Victorian era.
