Do you have an interest in traditional signwriting or drawing and painting letterforms?

Join Joby for a series of five virtual sessions broadcasted live plus our all NEW recordings that will be sent to you for you to refer back to.

Each of these sessions will be one hour long where he will demonstrate traditional skills and expert tips that are usually passed down through the generations.

This is a unique chance to hear Joby share some of his signwriting expertise which is normally reserved for students on his one-day and five-day signwriting courses. Joby will be teaching you how to draw letters that are structured correctly from a variety of different alphabets including how to scale each letter up and down to suit your signwriting need. He will be asking you to look at letters in a way that you have never done so before, to notice and appreciate key things about the letter that you are going to draw for example which bit of the letter is thick or thin. This course covers forming each letter correctly and true to its form, the beginnings of any piece of work.

Learn About Letters is drawing based and so pens, pencils, rulers and rubbers are essential. Downloadable references and worksheets are sent out with your booking confirmation and should ideally be printed off, if you are able. You will see a painting demonstration during the course when Joby holds an auction for you, the course attendees; providing you with the opportunity to buy some of his work whilst supporting the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice; a charity based near to the fairs winter quarters in White Waltham. The charity provides an invaluable hospice service to children in the community and their families, 100% of the auction proceeds are donated to the charity with you donating straight to them. Over the past 4 years Carters have raised over £40,000.00 for the charity and we are delighted to be able to continue to do this.

Having amassed 28 years-worth of experience Joby has extensive knowledge of accurate blocks and shadows on lettering which often eludes people even some professional signwriters. These days many turn to computers and digital software or use tapes, vinyls and masking. Joby teaches you the traditional ways of working that span over 100 years.

These traditional skills and expert tips are usually passed down through the generations, and are not readily available in books but Joby is passionate about keeping the traditional skills of signwriting alive and enjoys sharing this knowledge with his students.

Joby learned his craft with Stan Wilkinson which continues a signwriting lineage that spans five generations. Stan Wilkinson was apprentice to Mr Giles who had been trained by his father who in turn was trained by his father who was an in-house signwriter for Hovis in Basingstoke dating back to the Victorian era.
