Have questions about the fair?

How much does it cost to get in to Carters Steam Fair?

Entry to the fair is FREE. In exceptional circumstances the fair may be part of a larger event which has its own entrance fee (for example, a music festival). We will make it clear on our events listings when there is a fee.

How much do rides cost?

Rides and attractions vary from 4, 5 or 6 tokens per person; tokens are 50p each. You can choose to buy enough for a ride or two, or you can buy a bundle of tokens which will give you better value.

We offer a range of family friendly ride bundles – you'll get extra free rides if you pre-book by midnight before you visit.

These advance ride bundle deals offer the best value and give the most rides for your money. They are only available when you pre-book: you won’t be able to get the same deal on the day of your visit.

You can also buy additional tokens for the fair from the token booths at the fair.

How many tokens should I buy?

It depends on how many rides you want to go on. Rides and sidestalls take 4, 5 or 6 tokens per person.

If you have small children and they want to go on our little kiddie rides and play on sidestalls like hook a duck you’ll need 4 tokens for each ride or game.

Buying 40 ride tokens in a ride bundle would give you the equivalent of 10 little kid rides or sidestall games. You can spend your ride tokens however you want – perfect if you you want to go on some of the rides with them too.

When you book a ride bundle in advance we give you extra free ride passes alongside your ride tokens:

£20 = 40 ride tokens + 3 free passes = 9 - 13 rides

This offer is only available in advance. You can see more about the rides here.

Do I have to pay for myself if I am riding to support my toddler?

Yes, all riders pay to ride, whatever the age.

What time is the firework display?

At sites where Carters holds its own free-entry firework display, we usually hold it approximately 9pm on the evening in question.

In the summer months it may be later in the evening – fireworks look best against a night sky so we sometimes wait for the sky to be a bit darker.

Are dogs allowed at the fair?

Yes, we are dog-friendly, but please make sure they are on a lead and under control.

Are there age restrictions for the rides?

We don't have age restrictions, but for some rides we have height restrictions – see our rides page for information.

Small children can be accompanied on rides such as the Gallopers but you will need ride tokens for each person going on the ride.

When are you coming to my town?

To see our tour schedule, type your postcode or town in to our Find Your Nearest Fair tool on this page.

You can stay up to date with everything via our email newsletter – sign up to be the first to hear about dates and special events and offers.

Why don't you come to the north of England / Scotland / Wales?

Never say never! The furthest we currently travel away from our Berkshire yard is CarFest North in Cheshire, as our vintage lorries and steam engines need regular maintenance, and we need to be able to receive deliveries in order to keep the show on the road. But we are open to suggestions!

Have you got a park or open space that you think would be perfect for Carters? If so, get in touch. We do also take rides to far-flung places for commissioned film or hire jobs.

Can I hire the fair for my event?

Yes. We can provide either individual rides and attractions or the full fair (subject to availability).

Have a look at our hire page for more information. You will need to contact us for a full quote and give us some idea of the type of event you are holding, the dates, the times and the attractions that interest you.

Can we use the fair in our film, television production or photoshoot?

Yes, Carters has featured in many films, television programmes and magazines over the years, and we are very used to working with you to fulfil your requirements.

For more information, have a look at our hire page. You will need to contact us for a full quote and give us some idea of the type of event you are holding, the dates, the times and the attractions that interest you.

If you want to do a photo shoot when the fair is set up at one of our locations, we may be able to arrange some exclusive ‘out of hours’ access before the fair opens. Please get in touch via email with as much information as possible.

Where is my favourite ride?

All of our equipment is antique, and so it requires a lot of love and attention to keep it in tip top condition. Sometimes rides or attractions need a "birthday", so we take them off the road for a well-deserved rest and restoration to keep them running for another hundred years.

If your favourite ride is missing at the fair it is likely that it is either being restored at the yard or is otherwise engaged (in hire or film work) and will be back out on the road soon.

Some of the rides and sideshows are guest attractions that travel with us,and are not necessarily at every venue due to other commitments; these include the Jets, the Ghost Train, the Twist and others.

Are vintage rides safe for modern audiences?

All of Carters Steam Fair's vintage rides and attractions are subjected to the same rigorous safety checks and sign-offs that enormous modern white-knuckle rides go through, and every year they are inspected by an independent body and given an MOT by the Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme (ADIPS).

We take our customers' safety very seriously and ensure that our rides are in tip-top condition at all times. Some of our rides date back to the early years of the 20th century, and were white-knuckle rides in their day.

To ensure you have an authentic experience we keep them faithful to their original designs, so on some rides you must hold on tight for maximum fun.

Is there disability access on the fair?

We are very keen to make the fair an enjoyable experience for all our visitors, and we do all we can to ensure that disabled customers have a great day out.

Some of the rides are more accessible than others, and some customers might need carers or guardians to ride alongside them to ensure that they are happy and safe.

If anybody becomes distressed while a ride is in motion we will stop it and help them alight safely.

I want to run away with the fair!

We sometimes have opportunities for people to work on the fair. Most of the work is good old-fashioned labouring, and includes building up and taking down rides, but workers also operate the equipment during open hours and have to be cheerful, welcoming and a friendly member of the family.

If you would like to work for Carters, take a look at our jobs section.

I love the artwork on the fair! Is there anywhere where I can learn to paint like that?

Yes! In the winter when we are off the road, Joby Carter runs very popular painting courses to teach people traditional signwriting, lining, gilding and other skills connected to fairground painting.

Everything you see on the fair, including the rides, sidestalls, our vintage vehicles and our living wagons have been hand-painted and restored by the Carters team.

For more details about the courses and other learning activities, visit our learning section.

I need help restoring a vintage ride or vehicle. Can Carters help me?

Depending on your requirements, it's very possible that Carters will be able to help you.

We specialise in paintwork and décor but can also handle other aspects of your restoration for you. Contact us to discuss your requirements in more detail.

Are all the attractions with you all the time?

On the rare occasion we are required somewhere else, one or two attractions may be missing.

For example, Alex Hyman and his Jets ride will not be with us at Croxley Green this year (2019.) But rest assured he will be leaving his side stalls in the capable hands of other members of his staff.

I still have questions!

If you have any questions about Carters Steam Fair that aren't answered here or elsewhere on this site, please contact us and we'll do our best to answer them.
